Using "a" and "an"

A, an, or the can be used before singular nouns. Use an before a singular count noun that begins with a vowel sound. Remember that these letters are your vowels:

  • a
  • e
  • i
  • o
  • u

Here are some examples:

  • An apple
  • An eagle
  • An alert
  • An elbow
  • An orangutan
