Noticing abbreviations in notes

Taking notes is a complex skill that involves listening, understanding speech, focusing on the main ideas and paraphrasing them, writing, spelling, and (often) understanding and writing numbers. That's a lot!

It's good to practice taking notes. One way to help yourself is to use abbreviations, or shorter forms of the words. You are going to listen to some messages and write notes. Before you do, try to read these notes.

Read these notes from a phone message. What do they say? Is anything not clear?

Talk about the answers to these questions:

  Who left the message?

  Who is the message for?

How do you think Kat and Jane know each other?

What does Jane want Kat to do for her?

When does Jane want her to do it?

Now listen When you’re finished, listen to the audio message the speaker left. Does anything surprise you?
