In this unit, you have been learning some vocabulary and grammatical structures to add and express emphasis and intensity. This lesson will focus on three more ways of adding emphasis to existing sentences: do, reflexive pronouns, and emphatic time phrases.

Do

As you have learned, do is a very useful word in English that can function as both a main verb and an auxiliary verb. In addition, do can be included as an auxiliary verb where it is not required to add emphasis. Look at the following past and present simple sentences.

  • He had a good point when he said that maybe we shouldn’t move until next year.
  • I don’t speak Hindi, but I speak Bengali.
  • The restaurant offers vegetarian options if you are interested.

By adding the auxiliary verb do to the highlighted verbs, you create a stronger emphasis on them. Just be careful to adjust the grammar as needed.

  • He did have a good point when he said that maybe we shouldn’t move until next year.
  • I don’t speak Hindi, but I do speak Bengali.
  • The restaurant does offer vegetarian options if you are interested.
