Teacher Notes

This lesson is an extension of Listening 2-2 and requires that the students have completed it.

Part One: Warm Up

Discuss the following questions with your partner(s).

  1. What are some common requests at school? At work? At home? With friends?
  2. How comfortable are you refusing someone’s request? Why?
  3. Do you think it’s easier to refuse a request in writing or face-to-face? Why?
  4. How different do you think it is to refuse a request at school or work than it is at home or with friends? What differences are there?

Part Two: Getting Ready to Write

In this lesson, you’re going to learn how to respond to requests in writing. We’re going to use a written response to Nadia’s voicemail requesting a change at Brookway College from Listening 2-1 as an example.

Before you start, discuss with your partner(s) what you can remember about Nadia’s message. Who was she? What was she requesting from the college?
