Part One: Warm Up

Discuss the following questions with your partner(s).

  1. What is a research paper? If you don’t know, search online to help.
  2. Do/Did you need to write a lot of research papers at school? If so, give some examples. If not, what work do/did you need to do in class?
  3. Are any of the strategies used to write research papers useful in a work environment? Why or why not?
  4. When you read or watch the news, what are some things that you look for to determine if the information is accurate and objective?

Part Two: Getting Ready to Speak

In English 125, you learned that English speakers usually use a combination of sequencing adverbs, imperative verbs, adverbial clauses/phrases, and ‘should’ to give instructions. In this lesson, you will be reviewing and expanding on these strategies for giving instructions in English and then using this language to give instructions on how to write a research paper.

Open the exercise and follow the instructions.
