Present Simple tense tells us what is true, or a habit, or part of a schedule. All verbs can be present tense, but some are regular and some are irregular.

Present Tense

Be-verb: (irregular)

  • I am a student.
  • You are a student.
  • She/ he/ it is a student./ Jung is a student.
  • We are students.
  • They are students.

Have-verb: (irregular)

  • I have a dog.
  • You have a dog.
  • She / he / it has a dog./ Kyoko has a dog.
  • We have a dog.
  • They have a dog.

To make a negative:

Be-verb: (irregular)

  • I am not a student.
  • You are not a student.
  • She / he / it is not a student./ Jung is not a student.
  • We are not students.
  • They are not students.

Have-verb: (irregular)

  • I do not have a dog.
  • You do not have a dog.
  • She / he / it does not have a dog./ Kyoko does not have a dog.
  • We do not have a dog.
  • They do not have a dog.

To make a question:

  • Are you…?
  • Do you…?
  • Are you a student? Yes, I am. / No, I’m not.
  • Do you have a dog? Yes, I do. / No, I do not.
