In this unit, you have seen examples of buildings are architecture from around the world. Many exciting examples come from structures that are new or are being developed with cutting-edge modern technology. Some of the biggest achievements have come in areas of the world where engineers and city planners are working on redeveloping an area from scratch. For example, take a look at Masdar City in Abu Dhabi. This is what the city planners for this brand new city envisioned:

Some of the biggest challenges for city planners, engineers and architects involve problems of how to integrate new technologies and efficiencies into existing structures. Some cities around the world have found very creative ways to make their communities more efficient, environmentally-friendly and modern. But imagine if you could design and build a city from scratch. What would it look like?

In this project, you will be responsible for designing your own city! First, imagine where your city will be located. What is the environment like? What is the landscape like? What is the shape, condition and biome of your land? Put together a proposal to suggest why this area (it can be real or fictional) is the perfect place to design and build your new city.

Then, you will have to give your city an identity. What do you want to achieve in your city? Take Masdar City, for example. The symbol for Masdar is:

masdar2

The slogan for this city is: "The Global Centre of Future Energy." Can you see why their symbol is a good representation of their ideas and goals? You will need to put together a report to tell all the details about your new city. Invent a name, a symbol, a slogan, and give your city a purpose.

Then, you can begin designing your city! Many city planners put together a 3D model of their plans to give a clear idea of what they imagine.
