Statistics & Economics

Students explore vocabulary and activities about the interrelation of Statistics, Economics and STEM disciplines.

Paragraph Structure and Word Transformations

Students practice writing supporting sentences with strong detail and analysis. They also work to increase vocabulary by transforming key words in sentences. 

Vocabulary

This unit is particularly vocabulary-driven with introductions to a wide variety of academic and idiomatic vocabulary in nearly every lesson. 

 Math Vocabulary

Lessons introduce vocabulary for statistics and probability, beginning with data sets and ending with standard deviation. Students practice these words in variety of exercises.

Essay and Presentation

Students incorporate their math vocabulary and what they have learned about statistics throughout the unit to write an essay on statistics in STEM. Students also research and give a persuasive presentation about avoiding or adopting emerging economic technologies. 

True / False Questions

Students practice reading and listening for main ideas and details to successfully answer questions in this common question style.

Students learn about MIT's open courseware program and take a sample economics exam.

5-2 Corporations 101: The ABCs of the International Economy

Students watch a video on international economics and discuss the global economy and international markets.

5-1 Measuring Poverty

This lesson focuses on measuring poverty, using Canada's systems as an example. The reading includes vocabulary, prediction and completion exercises.

5-2 Poverty

In this lesson, students use research they have conducted to engage in a group project to create an action plan for a logical and practical solution to poverty.

5-3 How to Understand and Use Basic Statistics

In this lesson, students read some introductory material about  statistics and practice summarizing skills.

5-1 Roy Cleveland Sullivan’s 7 Lightning Strikes

Students listen to an amazing story of a man who was struck by lightning seven times. Students listen to identify statistics. Other exercises include note-taking, prediction, summarizing and categorizing.

5-2 What Are the Odds

Students watch a video about a man and woman who accidentally cross paths repeatedly and then work out the odds of such a coincidence. The exercise includeds listening for specific information, particularly concepts related to statistics. 

5-3 Poverty

Students watch a video about using immigration to fight poverty and complete a variety of vocabulary, comprehension and research exercises. 

5-4 Ransomware

In this lesson, students listen to a brief lecture on a recent economic problem, ransomware. Students answer true/false questions, rewriting false sentences to make them true.

5-1 Real Time Lightning Strikes

Students discuss lightning strikes and visit a website to research real time lightning strikes in different areas and statistics for weather patterns. Students also answer comprehension questions.

5-2 What Are the Odds?

Students discuss the phrase "what are the odds" and its connection to probability. Students watch a video on probability and complete a variety of comprehension exercises.

5-3 What is Random?

Students watch a video about the evolution of the word random and what it means in relation to math. Students answer comprehension questions.

5-4 Bitcoin

Students read an article and watch a video about bitcoin, an emerging cryptocurrency. Students answer true/false questions, rewriting false sentences to make them true. 

5-1 Statistics & Probability: Data Sets and Averages

A lesson and exercises introducing key vocabulary used in statistics and probability, focusing on mean, mode and median. 

5-2 Statistics and Probability: Range, IQR and Standard Deviation

Students learn and practice vocabulary and pronunciation for words related to range, interquartile range, variance and standard deviation.

5-3 Math Review: Real World Practice

Students read an article about how variance and standard deviation are important for investing. Students focus on vocabulary and understanding summaries of key points.

5-1 Careers in Statistics

Students read an article on careers in statistics and then explore jobs, researching and writing compare and contrast paragraphs about them. 

5-2 Presentation

Students create a persuasive presentation for adopting or avoiding a new economic technology, which they research and report on.

5-1 Paragraph Structure

Students review strategies for writing supporting sentences, focusing on details an analysis.

5-2 Combining Sentences

This lesson reviews how to combine simple sentences into compound sentences, complex sentences and compound/complex sentences.

5-3 Word Transformation

Students expand their vocabulary by rewriting sentences to keep the same meaning but using idioms.

5-4 Collaborative Word Transformation

Students practice word transformation by creating their own test questions for their classmates.

5-5 Essay

Students use the skills they've learned in this unit for paragraph structure to write an essay about statistics in STEM.
