Mean, mode and median aren’t the only ways to talk about the relationship amongst data in a data set. In this lesson, we will learn more key vocabulary for analyzing data sets.

  • range
  • IQR / interquartile range
  • midspread
  • lower data set
  • upper data set
  • outlier
  • standard deviation
  • low standard of deviation
  • high standard of deviation
  • variance

Range

Range is the difference between the largest and smallest number in the data set. For example, in the data set below, the highest number is 52 and the lowest number is 4. The range for this data set is 48 because 52 - 4 = 48.

  • 4
  • 20
  • 21
  • 22
  • 24
  • 25
  • 25
  • 26
  • 31
  • 32
  • 52

IQR

IQR stands for interquartile range. “Interquartile” looks like a strange and difficult word, but we can break it down into easier parts.

  • “Inter-” is a prefix that means “between” or “amongst.” For example, “international communication” is communication between or amongst nations.
  • “Quartile” is related to the word “quarter.” Just like how a quarter is one-fourth, an ascending data set can be divided into fourths. Each point of division is a quartile. There are three divisions needed to divide a set into fourths, so there are three quartiles.
