Pre-Listening

Roy Sullivan

"A temporary lightning tattoo on a "lucky" survivor From "Lichtenberg Figures Due to a Lightning Strike" by Yves Domart, MD, and Emmanuel Garet, MD, New England Journal of Medicine, Volume 343:1536, November 23, 2000

Watch the following video and use the questions to begin a discussion. Try to be sure everyone in your group gives their opinion and explains why they hold that opinion before moving on to the next question.

  1. What do you know about lightning? Are you or anyone you know afraid of lightning or thunderstorms? Is that kind of fear valid?

  2. How likely is it that you will be struck by lightning in your life?

Listening - Roy Cleveland Sullivan’s 7 Lightning Strikes

Exercise

Listen to first part of a larger Listening, which is only an Introduction to the topic. In your group, discuss how this relates to statistics and predict what you believe the rest of the Listening will be about and some of the elements that might be discussed. Statistics and interesting elements of an experience are not always one in the same. It is an important skill to be able to identify a statistic among interesting elements about an incident. Take notes, and identify statistics where you can in Exercise 4.

Now listen to the complete Listening passage and take notes on it. When it is finished, talk to your group about the main ideas that are discussed in the Listening. Re-write the Thesis Statement you made above by adding some more information from the Listening in Exercise 5.
