Question words review

In questions, we use different words what, which, when, where, who, why, and how to show the kind of information we want to know.

To ask about… We use…
a thing What do you do for work? Which internet providers can I use?
a time When do we pay rent?
a place Where is the nearest subway station?
a person Who can I call for maintenance?
the reason for doing something Why do I need to pay a pet deposit?
the way you do something How do you use the washer?

There is little difference between what and which as question words. In general, we use when there are many possible answers and which when there are only a few possible answers.

  • What do you do for work? (there are many possible jobs)
  • Which internet providers can I use? (there are only a few possible internet providers)
