How to introduce yourself
What do you think? What is the best way to introduce yourself at work? Listen and check (?) the way(s) you introduce yourself.

Hi, I’m Lyudmilla. Hello, my name’s Lyudmilla. How do you do? I am called Lyudmilla Melnyk.
It’s a pleasure to meet you. |
?? |
Actually, all of these are correct. Which you use depends on
- who you’re meeting,
- how formal you want to be,
- what the culture of the workplace is like.
In the USA, people tend to be informal, even in the workplace. You have to observe those around you and follow their example.
After you say your name, you can also give your nickname. This is often useful if people have a hard time saying your name!
??
Hello, my name’s Lyudmilla, …
- but most people call me Luda.
- but you can call me Luda.
- but I prefer Luda.
Then you should ask the other person, “What’s your name?” and “What do you like to be called?”
When you introduce yourself at work, you often say which department you work in or what you do. Like this:
|
Hi, I’m Lyudmilla, but please call me Luda. I work in Environmental Services. Hello, my name’s Luda. I’m a nursing assistant on the maternity ward. How do you do? I am called Lyudmilla Melnyk. I am a Licensed Practical Nurse. |
Less formal ?? More formal |
Practice introducing yourself, giving you name, your nickname (if you have one), and where you work. Practice being more or less formal.
