Part One: Warm Up

Discuss the following questions with your partner(s).

  1. What are some of the most popular cultural events in your country? These events could be holidays, festivals, or any other time when people gather to celebrate or practice their culture.
  2. Which cultural event was most important to you and your family when you were a child? Is it still as important? Has the way you celebrate it changed at all?
  3. Would you be interested in participating in another’s culture’s holidays or festivals? Why or why not?

Part Two: Getting Ready to Write

One of the challenges of describing a sequence of events, or a narrative, is that writers begin by stating what happened, action by action, and do not consider any organization or structure. Not only can this make it difficult for the reader to understand the order of events, but it also makes the writing uninteresting and repetitive. The two most effective tools for organizing a narrative are past tense variety and sequence adverbs.
