Part One: Warm Up

Look at the picture. The students are taking part in a seminar, which is a common form of instruction at university in English-speaking countries. It is a small group discussion between students about a specific topic. Seminars are often student-led and based on specific readings.

Discuss the following questions with your partner(s).

  1. Are seminars part of university courses in your country?
  2. Have you ever participated in a seminar?
  3. How comfortable are you expressing your opinions and debating issues with other people in a group?
  4. How might seminars be useful for student learning?
