Every year, hundreds of new films are made.
Look at these pictures.

What do these films have in common?

They are some of the most popular films of all time!
In 1939, a movie called Gone With the Wind was released.

Gone With the Wind only grossed $2 million USD, but in 1939, one dollar was not the same as it is now.
We can adjust to show how much $2 million USD would mean today.

Today, that is equal to $3.9 million USD!
That makes Gone With the Wind the highest-grossing movie in history.

But the film that really earned the most was Avatar, in 2009.
Avatar grossed more than $2.7 million USD.

Avatar was directed by James Cameron.
It took Cameron fifteen years to plan and make Avatar.
Avatar used new special effects that had never been seen before.

Before Avatar, the highest-grossing film was Titanic.
Titanic was also directed by James Cameron!

Star Wars, released in 1977, is another popular film.
It is the third highest-grossing film in history.
New movies are released every year. Will one of these become the new most popular movie?
