Using the information in the readings and the lecture, write an essay agreeing or disagreeing with the following statement:
Money is the key ingredient to motivating employees.
I do agree that money is the key ingredient to motivate employees. For people who are ambitious, money is an incentive to work hard and be more productive. Money enables people to acquire the things that they want such as a nice car, a house, many other things they want or need in life and as well travel.
According to Hierarchy of Needs by Abraham Maslow when basic needs, such as food, shelter, safety and love, are met then people may then move to the next level of needs such as social acceptance and belonging, ego, self-esteem, self-actualization. In order to meet the basic needs, people need money and this is a major incentive for motivating employees at a workplace.
According to Theory X, people hate work but desire security. In order to achieve security, they need money and again money can be used as a reward to motivate them.
According to Theory Y, people like their work and enjoy learning. They like the freedom to do challenging work. They seek self development but this can be achieved once the basic needs are met. In order to meet basic needs, one needs money and this again is an incentive for motivating employees.
