Not all books that are studied in English class have to be academic. Sometimes, the best way to learn is by looking at alternative types of text, like comics and magazines.
I don't think comics and graphic novels are as educational as books. It's hard to decide which graphic novels are academic and worth studying. I know some are, but others are really not educaitonal at all.
I don't think there are any books or graphic novels that aren't educational! As long as you are reading, you are gaining knowledge and building skills.
If kids could study comics and magazines that they were insterested in, they might become much better readers. Lots of kids complain about being bored of reading.
