Objectives & Sequence: This lesson is intended to be used after Listening 2-1.

cells

As we learned in Listening 2-1, there are two main types of stem cells: embryonic stem cells (also called ES cells or ESCs) and adult stems cells (also called somatic cells).

In the Listening, you learned about the traditional method of extracting embryonic stems cells and the ethical issues surrounding this practice.

Scientists have recently discovered some new methods of acquiring embryonic or embryonic-like stem cells that some argue avoid these ethical problems. In the Exercise, you will explore links describing these methods.
