WEEK 3 – CLASS 1 (3.1)

Prepared by: Todd Langmuir / CCEL BE Instructor

Homework from last class (BE 2.5):

  1. Research another company using the attached: "Job Search Checklist: The Company" and prepare a summary entitled: "A Company That I Would Like to Work For (& Why)" and present it to the class on Monday. (Why again? Because you will need to apply to many different companies in the future if you hope to land a good job!) Use your previous summary as an example.
  2. Please complete "Exercise 3: Subject-Verb Agreement".
  3. Please complete "Job Search Abbreviations".
  4. Review your worksheets (from the last 2 weeks): Quiz Monday.

Reading & Speaking (3) “Networking Events”: T briefly introduces the events offered. Have pairs discuss what/if any of the events would interest them. After this, write the question: “If you could attend any networking event, what would it be called?” Give Ss a few minutes to ponder this & ask each what the event would be titled. T could give each S feedback on each/some of these “dream events” (joining a professional association is an example of a good networking “back door” for outsiders) or each pair could discuss this… Pairs 15 min. Projector / board

Networking Lists (1) “Networking List”: T projects list. Discuss. T tells Ss to also keep working on their “Contacted Organizations List” (it is an important reference and record keeper of our job searches). Ask Ss which list they think is more important and why. Note: (The most common question is: “Should I work on this list for my social network in Canada or my own country?” The best answer is both; however, - for starters – Ss should begin with the list that is most practical. If the S is actively seeking an opportunity in Canada, that should be their first list. If the S tells T that they’re going back to Korea in 3 weeks, a Korean list would be most practical). & (“I don’t know anyone in Canada!” T: “Really? Then you had better start working on that!”) Homework: Ss work on lists. Group 10 min. Projector
Speaking & Listening (2) Have pairs discuss how they think they can build a Canadian network. Who can they put on their lists now? Where can they go to build up other areas? Pairs 10 min. Projector/ board

(a) – job searching at specific websites
(b) – a contact list of organizations

We can add for today:We can add for today:
(c) – a search for their “dream networking event"
(d) – a search to add to their network lists

Remind Ss that this is not a time for Facebooking a lover about a new tattoo or toenail polish!
