Although there appear to be numerous myths created about when to use phrasal verbs and the false notion that they are only used in informal spoken and written English, they are not uncommon in academic contexts. They are used in lectures and often read in serious journals.
Phrasal verbs often have a one-word synonym, which is commonly of Latin origin and sounds more formal than their phrasal verb equivalent. Both are appropriate when writing or talking about academic subjects. Vary your language by using both.
