- Have you ever experienced a situation where you had to apologize to someone or had someone apologize to you? What happened?
- Think about situations in which you would have to apologize. How would you do it? Have you ever written an apology before?
Part Two: Language Register / Further Discussion
Take a look at the three apologies below and discuss with your partner(s).
- Which one uses formal language and which one uses informal language. How do you know?
- Which one is a mix between formal and informal?
- Which do you think is appropriate in an email from a university to a student applying to the university?
- We regret to inform you that your application has not been accepted to the University of Vancouver Canada.
- We’d like to let you know that your application hasn’t been accepted to the University of Vancouver Canada.
- Sorry to say this, but you’re not going to UVC.
