Part One: Warm Up

Discuss the following questions with your partner(s).

  1. Have you ever experienced a situation where you had to apologize to someone or had someone apologize to you? What happened?
  2. Think about situations in which you would have to apologize. How would you do it? Have you ever written an apology before?

Part Two: Language Register / Further Discussion

Take a look at the three apologies below and discuss with your partner(s).

  • Which one uses formal language and which one uses informal language. How do you know?
  • Which one is a mix between formal and informal?
  • Which do you think is appropriate in an email from a university to a student applying to the university?
  1. We regret to inform you that your application has not been accepted to the University of Vancouver Canada.
  2. We’d like to let you know that your application hasn’t been accepted to the University of Vancouver Canada.
  3. Sorry to say this, but you’re not going to UVC.
