Being able to rephrase vocabulary and short phrases is an important skill for academic writing. Using different phrases than your source helps you have more control over your writing and ensures that the vocabulary level is consistent and appropriate throughout. Look at the following sentence taken from the Reading on addiction.
A weekend spent drinking far too much alcohol with friends is not a good thing and definitely has obvious, negative consequences, yet that does not constitute an addiction.
This sentence can be rephrased by simply replacing some key vocabulary as follows:
A weekend spent drinking a great deal of alcohol with friends is not the best activity and certainly has easily apparent, negative consequences, yet that does not represent an addiction.
