Objectives & Sequence: This lesson is intended to be used as a preview of Grammar 7-3.
Part One: Warm Up
Discuss the following questions with a partner or group:
- What kinds of things do you like to see at the airport?
- What usually happens to aircraft after the airport closes?
- Have you ever bought an aircraft?
- Do you think aircraft should be cheap or expensive to buy?
Part Two: Listening
Standard aviation radiotelephony requires that operators (pilots, air traffic controllers and others who communicate using radios) use phonetics when expressing letters or numbers. In the script that follows, the English is written as one would expect to read it. The spoken numbers are expressed in phonetics as they would be over the radio. Here is a list of the numbers as written and their phonetic equivalent:
Numbers | Phonetic Equivalent |
---|---|
Zero | Ze-ro |
One | Wun |
Two | Too |
Three | Tree |
Four | Fow-er |
Five | Fife |
Six | Six |
Seven | Sev-en |
Eight | Ate |
Nine | Niner |
Ten | Ten |
