Verb Patterns

Students review verb patterns and build an advanced understanding of how different meanings can be achieved by using verbs in different ways.

Using Gerunds

Students learn that gerunds are not only used as objects of certain verbs but are in fact a type of noun and can therefore be used in different parts of a sentence.

To + Infinitive Vs. To + Object + Infinitive

Students review which verbs can be used with these patterns as well as the major differences in meaning and usage between the two.

Verb That Describe Senses

Students practice how to express what they saw, heard, discovered, etc. by using gerunds and/or infinitive verbs.

10-1 Verb + To + Infinitive

Students learn several verbs that can be used in this pattern as well as how it can used in the negative.

10-2 Gerunds

Students learn the most common verbs followed by gerunds as well as other instances where gerunds can be found, including subjects in sentences, objects of prepositions, and sentence complements.

10-3 To + Infinitive or Gerund?

Students practice verbs that can be followed by either verb pattern with no difference in meaning as well as verbs whose meaning or usage changes depending on the verb pattern used.

10-4: Verb + Object + To + Infinitive

Students practice this verb pattern as well as its differences with verb + to + infinitive verb.

10-5 Sense Verbs with Gerunds or Base Verbs

Students practice using sense verbs with gerunds; eg - I saw them dancing, and the difference in meaning when sensed verbs are used with base verbs; eg - I saw them dance.
