Do all buildings look the same? No, not all buildings look the same. They can look different depending on how we use them.

If you live near the water, maybe you've seen a lighthouse. Lighthouses have been around for a long time. A lighthouse has a bright light. This bright light shines out into the water. Do you know what it is used for?

The bright light tells ships and boats that the water is getting shallow. The terrain can be rocky near the coast. It is hard to tell how far land is when it is dark outside. When it is dark, everything blends in. It can be dangerous if the vessels don't know they are approaching land.

Most buildings have a flat or a triangular roof. Have you seen a building with a dome? The Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada has a dome that lights up. It is very beautiful at night. You can watch hockey games and concerts there.

Farm animals usually don't live with humans in the same house. They live in barns. You will find horses, chickens, cattle, and hay inside the barn. Barns are not just for animals and farming tools. Some people have converted barns to houses. With some work, a barn can become a beautiful home too.

If you are on the farm, you might see a silo. A silo is a very large building, but we won't find people inside. It is used to store grain.

Have you seen this structure before? It's a water tower. A water tower has a tank that holds water. Some people live in water towers when the city doesn't need them anymore. The conversion of a water tower to a home is not simple. A water tower doesn't have a kitchen or a lavatory. It requires a whole makeover before anyone can live in it.

One-of-a-kind buildings add a special touch to the city's skyline. You can come up with your own special building too.
