Predicting Skills for Listening

Predicting skills involve looking at the questions before the lecture begins. This will help you know what to listen for, and it will also give you hints about the topic and main ideas in the lecture. These points explain how to use your 3 minutes of pre-listening time to get some information about what the lecture is about.

1. Skim the questions and predict what the topic and main ideas of the lecture could be.

Use your skimming skills to quickly locate information in the question booklet that will help you understand what the topic and main points could be.

Example

This chart in the Listening question booklet tells us that the topic of the lecture must be related to El Niño and that the main ideas could relate to the effects of El Niño in 1982-83.
