Unit Objectives
Computer Science

Students explore vocabulary and activities about the interrelation of Computer Science and STEM disciplines.

Project Proposals

Students learn about project proposals, which are common in numerous industries. Students practice reading and writing proposals using templates.

Reading Skills

Students practice some different reading skills in this unit, including reading infographics and reading aloud for correct pronunciation.

 Math Vocabulary

Lessons introduce geometry vocabulary from angles to tangents, and students practice these words in exercises.

Presentations

Students produce several short presentations in this unit focusing on different skills. One presentation focuses on transforming existing material into a slideshow and another centers around research into valuable currencies.

Evaluation Writing

Students learn about comparing information to a list of critera to produce an evaluation. In their unit essay, students write an essay evaluating a project proposal.

Unit Introduction Reading Listening
7-1 Computer Science

Students watch a video on the origins of modern computers and discuss key concepts regarding the development of computers and computer science.

7-2 Quantum Physics for 7 Year Olds

Students discuss what they know about quantum physics and watch a video that focuses on making a very difficult topic comprehensible. Afterwards, students discuss what they've learned.

7-3 Quantum Computing

Students learn about how computers use quantum physics by watching an explanatory video and discussing key ideas.

7-1 The Most In-demand Programming Languages of 2017

Students read an article describing eight of the most popular programming languages. This lesson practices previewing and prediction and reviews the use of details and analysis.

7-2 The Most ‘Physically Secure’ Computer Ever Built

Students discuss computer security, particularly "self-destruction" functions. Students read an article on the most secure computer ever built and then research other security precautions used today, comparing them to those discussed in the article.

7-3 Get More Out of Google

In this lesson, students practice reading an infographic, taking notes on the information presented on how to improve Google searches.

7-1 Blockchain

In this lesson, students watch an video describing blockchain, a storage system for secure online transcations. Students complete vocabulary, note-taking and comprehension exercises.

Students practice pronunciation, listening, and note-taking skills by working in pairs, taking turns reading aloud an article about the rise of Google.

Media & Tech Math Use of English
7-1 Disney•Pixar Shorts

Students read about the history of Disney and Pixar and then view Pixar shorts to see examples of computer-generated animation. Students research the processes and time required to produce this kind of animation.

7-2 Are We Living in a Simulation?

Students discuss simulations and watch a video positing the possibility that we are living in a simulation.

7-3 Natural Language Processing

Students discuss natural language processing and watch a video explaining how spell correction works in Google Wave and another video on how Siri was developed. Students answer a variety of listening questions.

7-1 Geometry: Angles, Congruence and Similarity

A lesson and exercises introducing key vocabulary used in geometry, focusing on angles.

7-2 Geometry: Circles

Students learn and practice vocabulary and pronunciation for words related to circles, including parts of circles and concepts related to circles, like tangents and inscribed angles.

7-3 Math Review: Real World Practice

Students watch a video on non-Euclidian geometry that utilizes the vocabulary they have just learned. Afterward, students answer comprehension questions.

7-1 Careers in Computer Science

In this lesson, there are links to descriptions of twelve popular careers related to computer science. Students are assigned a career and transform the information from the webpage into a slideshow presentation.

7-2 Teaching 3D Animation to High School Students

Students read an interview with a teacher who is bringing 3D animation education to high school students. The exercise practices summarizing skills.
