Objectives & Sequence: This activity is intended to be used as a review of Grammar 3-3.
Students work in pairs and open the corresponding pages below.
On each page, students are presented with two stories along with comprehension questions and answers. Students are to read their stories one at a time to their partners and then quiz them with the comprehension questions. Partners need to answer the comprehension questions, but they need to form answers in the passive voice. The students' answers should match the ones provided under each question.
Emergency Landing
On Tuesday afternoon, Peter was returning to land at Abbotsford airport. He contacted the Control Tower and received the current wind, altimeter and runway in use. On completing his pre-landing check and turning final for runway 07 he selected his landing gear down. Much to Peter’s surprise his landing gear failed to extend. Peter informed the controllers that he was having gear problems and request a hold south of the airport to try and get his problem fixed. Orbiting to the south of the airport Peter quickly determined that he could not lower the gear and would require an emergency landing and requested the emergency equipment to be standing by.
Peter receiving permission for a emergency landing turned final and selected the grass to the north of the runway for his belly landing to help reduce damage to his aircraft. On landing Peter was uninjured and the aircraft only sustained damage to the propeller and one wing tip.

Smoke in the Engine
It was a beautiful sunny afternoon and we sitting at the end of the runway in Jakarta awaiting take-off clearance from the control tower.
On receiving take-off clearance we applied full power and released the brakes. Upon reaching V1 the control tower advised us our right engine was smoking. Electing to abort our take-off and shutting down the right engine we came to a stop at the far end of the runway. The control tower advised that the crash crew were responding.
We observed that our right engine was indeed on fire and we activated the engine fire suppression system. The captain order an evacuation of the aircraft, just as the crash crews arrived on scene.

The Earthquake
My husband, Brian and I were sitting in the departure gate area of the airport in Tokyo. We were waiting for our flight to board and watch the movement of aircraft and vehicles around the airport.
Suddenly everything seemed to be moving even the aircraft that was parked in front of our window at the gate. Behind us things started falling off the tables and chairs and people starting falling to the floor. We realized this might be an earthquake. Rear gripped us as we just did not know what we should do or where we should go.
The shaking only lasted a few seconds and when it stopped there was a silence followed by confusion. An announcement was then made over the PA system that the earthquake was minor and over and for people to remain calm.

The Flight Test
It early morning and I am sitting in my F16 awaiting takeoff clearance from the tower. This is a flight test and I have requested a maximum performance departure and climb.
My request was approved and I received takeoff clearance. I started my roll and at midfield I had enough altitude to retract the gear to begin my afterburner climbout. At ten thousand feet I hit a flock of ducks and the aircraft shook violently and my canopy exploded. I declared an emergency and requested an immediate landing.
The tower issued landing clearance and called out the crash crews. I executed a tight 180 degree turn to the left while losing altitude to set myself for a close in final. Turning base leg I lost power and advised the tower I would be making a barrier engagement.
Upon landing I was taken by the ambulance crew to the base hospital with what turned out to be minor injuries. The aircraft damage was engine destroyed, cockpit bubble destroyed and fuselage dented.
