Past Condition + Present Result

  1. Imagine youdidn't eat breakfast before school.  The result of this now is that you are very hungry.  
    • If I had eaten breakfast before school, I wouldn't be so hungry now.

Another way of saying this sentence without conditionals may help you to understand the meaning:

For example:  I did not eat breakfast before school (past situation/condition) so I am hungry now (present result/situation) OR  I am hungry now (present result) because I did not eat breakfast before school. (past situation/condition)

  1. Imagine you were born in an English-speaking country.  The result of this is that your English is perfect.
    • If I hadn't been born in an English-speaking country, my English wouldn't be perfect.
  2. Imagine it was Jim's birthday yesterday.  The result of this is that he is sick this morning.
    • If it hadn't been Jim's birthday yesterday, he wouldn't be sick this morning.

Present Condition + Past Result

  1. Imagine you didn't understand the movie last night because you don't speak French.
    • If I spoke French, I would have understood the movie.

Another way of saying the above sentence without conditionals:

I do not speak French (present situation/condition) so I did not understand the movie last night (past result)  OR  I did not understand the movie last night (past  result) because I do not speak French. (present situation/condition)

  1. Imagine you didn't eat the meat because you are a vegetarian.
    • If I weren't a vegetarian, I would have eaten the meat.
  2. Imagine you had to stay home last night because your car isn't working.
    • If my car were working, I wouldn't have had to stay home last night.
