What is word stress?

For every polysyllabic word in English, there is one syllable that gets more emphasis when it is pronounced. Native speakers emphasize syllables by making the sound of that syllable.

  • longer
  • louder
  • higher-pitched

Word stress refers to the accurate pronunciation of vocabulary by correctly emphazising the stressed syllable.  For this reason, it is also sometimes referred to as "syllable stress".

  • viral: two syllables; stress on the first syllable - viral
  • debunk: two syllables; stress on the second syllable - de bunk
