Read the article you will find in the Lesson Document ignoring the blank spaces. Once you have read the article place the sentence fragments (a-j) from the list you will find in the document into the corresponding blanks (1-10). Then, work together with a partner and compare your ideas about the following questions.
  1. What do you think is the register (formal, core or informal)? Why? Can you provide a few examples from the article to support your choice?
  2. Highlight the thesis statement of the article.
  3. Highlight the topic statements of the article.
  4. Brainstorm vocabulary which means the same, synonyms, for the subjects and predicates of your highlighted statements.

Additional Notes

Because is generally used when the reason is the most important part of the sentence; comes at the end in formal writing.
As/since is used when the reason is already well-known; or less important than the rest of the sentence.

After doing Exercise 1 and answer the previous questions do the other exercises.
