In this unit, you will write a Division and Classification essay. Before you write the essay, it is important to consider the following:
  1. Purpose: To divide and categorize a subject into classes based on a specific criteria or idea, in order to help the reader better understand the subject. The intention may be to help the reader make an informed decision, form an opinion, etc.
  2. Audience: An academic audience of critical readers. The audience will also depend on the subject of the essay. For example, if you are categorizing dogs based on temperament, your audience may be prospective dog owners or trainers.
  3. Goals:
    • to divide the subject into clear and logical categories
    • to clearly define and explain each category for the reader
    • to display critical thinking by making an interesting classification and avoiding the obvious bases such as age, gender, size, etc.
