Reading 8-1: Controlling Idea
Both fiction and nonfiction uses a controlling idea. Another name for a controlling idea is theme.
The controlling idea/theme answers the question, “What is this story about?”
A controlling idea or theme is different than a topic. Topics are very general. A controlling idea/theme is very specific.

A controlling idea/theme is important because it keeps the author and the reader focused.
