Here is a list of terms we talked about in Units 1-5.

Words Parts of Speech Definitions
vocabulary noun a list of words/all the words that someone knows
define verb correctly describe a word
definition noun a sentence that says what a word means
parts of speech phrase word types (noun, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions)
phrase noun two or more words used together to make a meaning
writer/author noun the person who writes
reader noun the person who reads
I pronoun used by writers or characters to talk about themselves
you pronoun used by writers or characters to talk to another person
he pronoun used by writers or characters to talk about a man
she pronoun used by writers or characters to talk about a woman
it pronoun used by writers or characters to talk about a thing
character noun a person in a story
quotation marks noun (“  “) used to show someone is talking - exact words
past tense adjective/noun a form of a verb that shows something that happened in the past
say/said verb express feelings and ideas using words
agree/agreed verb express same opinion using words
shout/shouted/
yell/yelled
verb use words loudly
explain/explained verb tell someone to make it clear
remark/remarked verb to say something about what you just noticed
ask/asked verb say something to get information from someone else
think/thought verb have words or ideas in your mind
sing/sang verb make music with the voice
setting noun time and place for a story
fact noun information known to be true
opinion noun ideas or beliefs about an idea
present tense adjective/noun a form of a verb that shows something happens now
future tense adjective/noun a form of a verb that shows something will happen in the future
fiction adjective/noun stories about imaginary people
nonfiction adjective/noun stories/articles about real people and real events
