In Grammar 10-2, you reviewed how to use reported speech to report statements. This lesson will focus on using different reporting verbs and structures to report questions, functions, and other ideas.

Reporting questions— ask, want to know

You can report questions using the reporting verbs ask and want to know followed by if-/whether- noun clauses for yes/no questions, and wh- noun clauses for information questions.

Reporting advice and suggestions— advise, warn, recommend, suggest

You can report advice using the verbs advise and warn followed by object + infinitive clause.

  • “You should book your flight one week later.”
    • The airline advised me to book my flight for one week later than I had originally planned.
  • “You need to be careful when handling the chemicals”
