Good vs. Bad Conflict

Conflict is inevitable, but combat is optional.

Max Lucado

Not all conflict is created equally. There is a good way to have conflict and a bad way to have conflict. Think of it as constructive conflict on the one hand and destructive conflict on the other.

Destructive conflict

Destructive conflict is exactly how it sounds and what Lucado refers to in the quote above as “combat.” Destructive conflict frequently starts in the same way as any other disagreement but deteriorates into combat due to how it’s avoided or addressed. Destructive combat manifests when the opportunity for new understandings, alignment, and improvement has been lost.
