What is Register?
The term “register” is used to describe the level of formality in writing. Register refers to the extent to which a formal style of writing is required as opposed to a casual and informal approach. Just like dress code, degrees of register and formality exist across a wide spectrum- from the very informal and casual to the very formal and structured.
The Importance of Register
As with dress code, the appropriate level of formality is entirely dependent on the situation, context, and culture, and, as a writer, you must adjust your register to suit the circumstances. Too casual a register will undermine the writer's professionalism and credibility. Excessive formality runs the risk of being perceived as aloof and out of touch with the audience.
