Your purpose is to make your audience see what you saw, hear what you heard, feel what you felt. Relevant details, couched in concrete, colourful language is the best way to recreate the incident as it happened and to picture it for the audience.

Dale Carnegie

Purpose, audience, and message delivery protocol must be carefully deliberated and selected to enable good communication. The communication channel should be carefully chosen while taking into consideration,

  • The nature of the message.
  • The purpose of the communication.
  • The intended audience and the desired response.

This context should be incorporated into the process of planning a communication. There are five steps to this process:

  • Understand the purpose (Lesson 4-1)
  • Identify the audience and understand the audience and their needs / perceptions / preferences / cultural context (Lesson 4-2)
  • Deliver the message in the most appropriate communication channel with both the purpose and audience in mind.(fig 1.)
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the communication. Was the communication purpose / goals achieved? (fig 2.)
  • Take action on the results of the evaluation of the communication.(fig 3.)
