Why is Listening Important to Communication?

I like to listen. I have learned a great deal from listening carefully. Most people never listen.

Ernest Hemmingway

Listening is important to effective communication because it is;

  • The means by which both parties absorb the exchange of intent
  • The means by which verbal and nonverbal responses and feedback are processed

Increasing how well we listen produces a number of significant benefits. It improves productivity, reduces miscommunications, and strengthens our ability to negotiate, influence, and persuade.
