Prepositions show the relationships between nouns, pronouns, and other words. We usually use them to describe place, time, and movement. This lesson will focus on prepositions of movement. As their name suggests, these kinds of prepositions help us describe how things move through places.

Here are some of the more common prepositions of movement.

to, towards, from, and away from

We use to to indicate the destination, or where the movement ends.

  • I’m moving to Christchurch next year for work.

Towards shows the direction the object or person is moving to.

  • She’s walking towards the entrance of the station, so she must be going in.
