In units 3 and 5, we learned about some of the ways we can link ideas within a paragraph to express comparisons and contrasts and cause and effect. In this lesson, we’re going to look at some of the ways we can connect paragraphs to other paragraphs in longer forms of writing to give them a stronger sense of cohesion.
First and Last Sentences
One of the most common ways to connect your paragraphs is by ending a paragraph with a sentence that looks forward to the next paragraph or by starting a paragraph with a sentence that looks back to the paragraph just before it.
Looking Forward
Look at the way these two paragraphs are linked.
...being part of a strong neighbourhood gives you a feeling of connection. It helps you to feel that you are part of something larger than yourself and you have a place to call home. Simply put, it feels good to be a part of that kind of neighbourhood. However, living in a good neighbourhood can do more than just make you feel good; it can benefit you in more practical ways as well.
One of the biggest practical benefits of living in a close neighbourhood is security. When you know your neighbours and have a close relationship with them, everyone can look out for each other and act when something goes wrong.
