As we learned in 7-1, one of the most important parts of a persuasive essay is responding to the counter argument. This is where your essay considers an argument that is counter to your thesis. At first, this may seem like you are arguing against your own thesis, but properly done, it will actually make your arguments stronger and more persuasive.

Responding to a counterargument not only shows that you have considered both sides of an issue, but it also can anticipate the doubts of a skeptical reader and counter any objections they may have. The counter-argument can come in many places in your essay, but it is most effective if it comes after you have explained your position and before you conclude your essay.
