Thesis Statement

A thesis statement should clearly state your position in relation to the prompt.

Below is an example of a thesis statement which clearly states the writer's position regarding the prompt (see bold):

  • We all share the same planet. If a butterfly flaps its wings above the Atlantic Ocean, a storm might erupt in India. A problem in one corner of the world can impact the whole planet. Climate is one of the most important factors that can affect the whole world. The forces behind dangerous weather events can be mysterious and difficult to predict, but governments should share with us whatever they do know about such events in the future.

This thesis statement acknowledges that the causes of weather disturbances can be "mysterious," but it also expresses a strong need for governments to do all they can to inform the public of long range forecasts.

Here is another example:

  • When will the next big storm hit your city or town? What will the effect be? Even though there is a risk that long range forecasting may not always be completely accurate, I think most of us would like some answers to these questions. Governments should do all they can to answer these questions so that lives can be saved and damage to a community can be minimized.
