Get into groups and get out the notes you took on The Old Man and the Sea for pages 42-70. Go through your notes and discuss them in great detail, being sure to add to your own notes if needed. Try to consider the following questions as you talk:

  1. What messages do you see in this section of the novel? Is there something the author is trying to teach us about?
  2. What more do you learn about Santiago's character? What is his relationship with the sea and what does it represent to him?
  3. Why doesn't Santiago give up and leave the fish out at sea? What drives him to work so hard to bring the fish back to his village?
  4. Do you feel that Santiago was defeated? Did the sea win? Was there no winner?
