Get into groups and get out the notes you took on The Old Man and the Sea for pages 1-41. Go through your notes and discuss them in great detail, being sure to add to your own notes if needed. Try to consider the following questions as you talk:

  1. What messages do you see in this section of the novel? Is there something the author is trying to teach us about?
  2. What is your impression of Santiago? Do you think he is a good fisherman? What qualities do you think he represents?
  3. What would you predict will happen next in the story? What do you hope will happen? (Students who read the story before or read ahead, do not reveal the next part of the story.)
