We can use ‘may’ or ‘might’ to politely ask for permission to do something.

  • May I go to the washroom?
  • Might I ask you a question?
  • May I borrow your pen?

To use ‘might’ or ‘may’ to ask a question we need three parts.

  • The verb ‘may’ or ‘might’...
    • May I go?
  • A subject...
    • May I go?
  • And another verb.
    • May I go?

And of course a question mark at the end!

To answer such a question we can either use ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.

We can also say ‘Yes, you may’ or ‘No, you may not’.
