We can talk about what happens in a movie or a book by sequencing the events. The events are the important things that happen in the story. For example, in the Harry Potter stories:

  • First, Harry finds out he is a wizard.
  • Then, he goes to Hogwarts to study.
  • After that he makes friends with Ron and Hermione.
  • Also, Voldemort is the bad guy trying to kill Harry.
  • In the end, Harry defeats Voldemort.

We use sequencing words to tell the story:

  • First
  • next
  • then
  • also
  • finally
  • in the end
  • additionally
  • when

You can talk about your life using sequencing words and phrases, too.

  • I was born in Australia.
  • When I was 5-years-old I moved to Canada.
  • When I was 21-years-old I went to university in America.
  • After university I travelled the world as a teacher.
  • Finally I returned to Canada to be a writer.
