Modals of Prohibition

To prohibit something is to say that it is not allowed or acceptable. Modal verbs can often be used to express this. We can use modals of prohibition to talk about the present and the future:

  • must not
  • may not
  • can't / cannot

We can also use modals of prohibition in the past tense. The only one of these modals is:

  • couldn't / could not
