Active

When the subject of a verb is doing the action, we say the verb is in the active.

Subject + Verb + Object

  • Active: Mr. Peares wrote that report.

Passive

When the subject of a verb receives the action, we say that the verb is in the passive. We use to be with a past participle to form the passive.

To Be + Past Participle

  • Passive: That report was written by Mr. Peares.
