Objectives & Sequence: This lesson is intended to be used as a preview of Grammar 12-3.
Part One
Work with a partner. Read the conversations and fill in the blanks with either on, off, up, or down. When you are finished, listen to check your answers as a class.
A: What was your favourite part of the space museum?
B: Probably the most interesting part was learning about the space suits they wear.
A: Oh yeah? Did you get to try one ______?
B: No. We weren't allowed. Plus, it's too difficult on Earth because they weigh so much, but in space, as there isn't any gravity, it's much easier to put one ______ and take one ______.
A: I see. Interesting.
A: Do you want to check out my telescope?
B: Cool! Can you see any planets with this thing?
A: Well, it depends on the time of the year, but right now you can see Venus and Mars.
B: May I try? How do I switch it ______?
A: Bill, it's a telescope. You don't need to turn it ______ or ______. It's not a machine.
B: Oh, okay.
A: 9-1-1. What is your emergency?
B: UFO! You know. Spaceship! Whatever. I just saw one flying in the sky above my house. What should I do?
A: Okay. Slow ______ please, sir. What did you say?
B: Aliens! UFO! You know what I mean. They're here. In Vancouver!
A: Calm ______ sir. I'm sure it was just a shooting star or something.
A: Have you ever considered what it's like in space without gravity?
B: Yeah, they must do things quite differently.
A: I wonder how they sleep. When we go to bed, we lie _____, and when we wake ______, we stand ______.
B: That's right. I guess you can't drop anything in space, so they never have to pick anything ______.
A: It must be really bizarre.
B: Yeah, that would be strange.
Part Two
Exercise
With your partner, open the transcript and practice the conversations. Use the recordings to help you with the pronunciation and intonation of the words. Try to mimic the style of the speakers.
